*I drafted this back in Spring 2021 and never got round to publishing. Thought I’d share anyway as I liked the contents. More consistency in 2022 fingers crossed!*

Hello guys,

I hope you are well. Sticking with the last email format, we've got some links, a snapshot of what I'm working on, a quote, and a photo. Enjoy!

Snapshot of what I'm working on

Me and the guys at Metrik have decided to take a little break in client projects to pursue some pet projects together. The first of these is VenueScan — a product concept to help venues transition to contactless. After some pretty dire experiences of ordering a drink in a club with poor WiFi (in between lockdown one and two), and general dissatisfaction with how QR codes have been implemented during their recent spike in use, we're having a go at our first SaaS.

We're using linktree as quite a heavy reference, only aiming for a less fragmented and customisable experience, allowing for links, files, and text to be plugged in and to be displayed on the dashboard to punters. Drinks ordering is a bit further in the roadmap.

Here's a snapshot of a logo and v0.1 interface I had a go at yesterday.

  1. Rasmus Andersson’s take on 'speed, actual perceived UI speed' with a great example article: 'Performance matters' by Hillel Wayne - https://www.hillelwayne.com/post/performance-matters/ .

Speed, actual perceived UI speed, was a corner stone of both Spotify and Figma from day 1. It is an incredibly important quality which is rarely in the limelight. For tools in particular it is absolutely key for over-all quality.

Prioritizing speed and performance is a cultural choice companies make. Hard to fix it later. At Airbnb there would be an entire team dedicated improving performance. Many of their gains were nullified soon after by another team adding something that slowed things down again

  1. Netflix Product Designer | Navin Iyengar | Design Like a Scientist – a really good watch on Netflix's approach to product design. At a high level it is as simple as how we are taught science in school: hypothesis, experiment, analyse.
